DISCOVER Magazine Launches Dramatic New Website -- 25 Years of Leading In-Depth Health and Technology Editorial Content Meets Web 2.0 Site offers robu
New York, NY (PRWeb) March 20, 2007 -- DISCOVER , the magazine of science, technology and the future, will unveil a newly redesigned website that reflects its ongoing commitment to delivering science news through the most innovative technology available.
The website relaunch will intentionally coincide with the Spring Equinox (March 20), a longstanding symbol of rebirth and renewal.
"The intention is to build outward and to eradicate the preciousness of the science category. I want to open the windows a little wider, explore the world philosophically, admit we don't have all the answers -- and not take ourselves too seriously," says Bob Guccione, Jr., CEO & Publisher.
Uniquely among content-rich vertical industry sites, the newly named discovermagazine.com (http://www.discovermagazine.com) will feature a video front and center on its homepage, allowing a dynamic environment for users to watch science in action.
The new website will have an emphasis on exclusive online content with topics including, but not limited to, health and medicine, mind and brain, technology, space, human origins, living world, environment and physics and math.
A new free weekly exclusive podcast called Vital Signs (http://discovermagazine.com/podcasts) will present new medical mysteries on the site. Vital Signs is currently the #1 ranked medical-related podcast on iTunes (http://www.itunes.com) with over 75,000 monthly downloads.
The site will also offer RSS feeds (http://discovermagazine.com/rsslist/) and blogs with rich photo galleries and high impact videos. All efforts are focused on the need for more science and technology content desired by web users thus providing a robust environment for advertisers and brand marketers.
"Our online traffic has more than doubled in the last year so we're transitioning a successful site into one even better, says Bob Guccione, Jr., DISCOVER"S CEO and Publisher.
"The site now reaches more than 640,000 unique visitors and over 1.3 million page views per month," notes Web Editor Amos Kenigsberg.
There is a variety of advertising opportunities available online. DISCOVER offers IAB (Internet Advertising Bureau) standard ad units as well as rich media within any of the topic-related areas, podcasts, newsletters and emails. Custom sponsorships are available as well as integrated (online and offline) campaigns.
The website relaunch features another direct-to-video element: a recurring contest, "Science in Two Minutes or Less," (http://www.discover.com/twominutesorless/) that challenges readers to create videos explaining complex scientific concepts in no more than two minutes. Columbia University physicist Brian Greene, best-selling author of "The Elegant Universe," will judge the first contest - about string theory, perhaps the most baffling scientific concept of our time - to be broadcast on discovermagazine.com.
"Like our new website, our contest is something of an exercise in citizen science, an effort to democratize disciplines that are far too often elitist," says Guccione. "It's also an attempt to engage our readers in a stimulating dialogue with anyone curious about science - and ultimately, to expand the DISCOVER community."
